Maternal rage is now recognized by clinicians as a legitimate presenting issue in the perinatal period and beyond. But rage is not limited to mothers. Parents of all genders, therapists, activists, and anyone paying attention to the state of the world are experiencing real, justified anger.
The problem is not the rage itself. The problem is that we have been taught to suppress it, manage it, medicate it away. We have been told to breathe it down, smile through it, and "stay calm." But suppressed rage does not disappear. It gets stored in our bodies, our nervous systems, our relationships.
What if we stopped trying to manage our rage and started honoring it instead? What if we created a space to express it fully, safely, and without judgment? What if we listened to what our rage is trying to tell us, and found both compassion and a path forward?
Rage rooms offer mechanical catharsis: you smash things, scream, and leave. Research shows this can actually reinforce anger patterns rather than help you understand them. Why? Because venting without integration is like opening a pressure valve briefly, then slamming it shut. The pressure remains. And you never learn what your rage was trying to tell you.
Our approach combines feminist therapy, expressive art workshops, and somatic practices for nervous system healing and collective processing.
Our Approach Is Different
Contrast therapy (alternating heat and cold) is evidence-based for nervous system regulation and emotional resilience. After honoring and expressing your rage, this is where the body integrates.
Screaming, throwing paint, and art-making become meaning-making. Paired with breathwork and Reiki guided meditation, these embodied practices honor your rage and facilitate nervous system integration.
Nestled in the woods of Exton, Pennsylvania, Fox Den Wellness provides the perfect container for this work. The natural setting creates safety and permission to express what cannot be expressed in everyday life.

We start by reframing rage. It's not a personal failure. It's a signal. It's often a response to systemic injustice, too-high expectations, and the impossible demands placed on women, mothers, and caregivers.
You'll move into the woods with canvas, paint, and music. No artistic skill required. No judgment. Just expression. Explore your rage, grief, or whatever is showing up for you. Scream, sing, dance, paint, move your body however feels right.
After painting, we pause. You'll reflect on what you created and what it means. You'll find a word that resonates with what you discovered.
Your nervous system has been activated. Now we regulate. Multiple cycles of sauna and cold contrast bring your body back to baseline. This is where integration happens. You'll have space to socialize and share about your experience.
In the final sauna, we anchor your clarity word. A Reiki-guided meditation helps you integrate what you've learned and discover how to take it forward.
You'll add your clarity word or a representation of it to your art. Then we gather in the lounge with snacks and journals to share, connect, and celebrate what we've discovered together.

Important distinction: This is not therapy. This is a therapeutic experiential retreat designed by a licensed clinician who understands nervous system regulation, somatic practices, and the neurobiology of emotion.
Kanjana Hartshorne is a licensed psychotherapist, IAYT certified yoga therapist, certified compassion fatigue professional, and Reiki Master redefining what healing can look like in the therapy room. She is the founder of Healing Hearts Wellness, a holistic group practice where she and her team of somatic and yoga therapists blend traditional talk therapy with body-based approaches to mental health such as IFS, EMDR, yoga therapy, reiki, creative arts, ecotherapy, dance movement therapy, therapeutic writing, spiritual practices, and other somatic therapy.
There's a lot of reason for us to be angry right now. Suppressing it costs us. Expressing it, honoring it, and channeling it into action is how we reclaim our power. That's why she created these retreats. Because rage, when honored and integrated, becomes clarity. And clarity becomes action.
She leads the annual Body Compassion Project Retreat, CE workshops for therapists, and individual and couples intensives that invite people to break free from rigid systems and reconnect with their body, energy, and spirit in playful, creative, and transformative ways that honor their own beliefs and ancestral practices.
Rooted in both scholarship and spirituality, Kanjana is passionate about helping people in all bodies discover a more compassionate relationship with themselves across every layer of being: physical, energetic, mental, emotional, and spiritual. She believes therapy doesn't have to stay inside the box. It can be soulful, imaginative, and even magical.

Questions?
There is no pressure to perform. You are invited to express in whatever way feels authentic to you. Some people scream, some sing, some dance, some laugh, some stand in silence. It's your practice. The retreat is about honoring your own pace and capacity. Kanjana will guide you through options and you get to choose what feels right.
For most people, yes. The retreat is designed with nervous system safety in mind. If you have any medical conditions, please contact your medical team in advance and let us know during registration if any accommodations are needed. We have alternate activities if you need to skip the sauna and cold contrast. All somatic practices (Lion's Breath, Reiki guided meditation) are offered with clear instructions and options.
Each retreat includes five core components:
Come wearing your sauna gear (swimsuit or clothes you don't mind getting wet) with your painting clothes layered on top. Bring your own towel and dry change of clothes for the way home. We will provide paint, canvas, poncho, and eye goggles.
Optional: journal (we have them available), noise-cancelling headphones if you are sound sensitive (we provide earplugs upon request), and extra snacks if you have dietary preferences. We have snacks and water available, but bring your own water bottle if you prefer. Most importantly, bring an open heart and willingness to be vulnerable and authentic.
The retreat includes a clarity plan session where you will work with Kanjana to identify what you learned and how you want to move forward. For therapists and helpers, this is an invitation into deeper work and the annual mastermind. For women and nonbinary folks, you will leave with concrete practices and resources for continuing the work at home.
Absolutely. Many people come with a friend or colleague. The group size is intentionally small (6 for therapists, 12 for women and nonbinary folks) to ensure intimacy and safety. If you're interested in bringing someone, let us know during registration.
These retreats are for anyone feeling rage, grief, or overwhelm right now. If you are a therapist or wellness professional (April 26), a woman or nonbinary person navigating systemic injustice (April 10), or anyone else who recognizes their anger as a signal rather than a flaw, there is a place for you here.
Reach out to Kanjana directly at healingheartswellness.com or through the registration form. She is happy to talk through any concerns or questions before the retreat.
